Ford Motor Company recently filed for a patent that will use drones as a way to enhance self-driving cars. This move makes perfect sense because drones can “see” much farther than the sensors on a car can reach. The idea is to connect the drone to the onboard computers within the vehicle to increase the working range of the autonomous vehicle as well as improve safety.
“There is an opportunity to make a big difference with vehicles and drones working together for a common good,” Ken Washington, Ford vice president of Research and Advanced Engineering, said at CES. While Ford does not plan to ship drones out with its vehicles any time soon, the filing of the patent represents a big leap in technology that may some day become the new standard in technology for autonomous vehicles…both on the ground and in the air.
