The Autonomous Systems Laboratory at Stanford University is using a drone to demonstrate “real-time kinodynamic planning” in which a drone faces off with a fencer and uses intelligent algorythms to avoid the fencer’s foil. The drone has been taught to steer and change speed in order to avoid the fencer as he thrusts toward the drone.
The quadcopter has learned to compute the optimal, open path. This technology could be used in a variety of applications including shipping, driverless cars and even commercial aviation. While fencing is a great way to demonstrate this technology, it is doubtful that the drone will ever actually be given a sword!
